This unique exhibition consists of 55 exhibits and national treasures dating from the Revolution of 1821 that belong to the collection of the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra (HAMH), plus 20 handmade models representing ships that were used during the naval operations of 1821 from the collection of Mr.Dimitris Maras, Mechanical-Engineer M.Sc, Microshipbuilder.

The Bicentennial of the Revolution of 1821, which also marks the founding of the Modern Greek State, is of highest historical importance to all Greeks around the world. The aim of the exhibition is its presentation in countries abroad, creating a unique opportunity to promote the contribution of the Greek Revolution to the history of Europe through its multi-thematic levels that will be of interest not only to Greek Diaspora, but to the global community as well.

The exhibits are supported by rich material such as wall texts, captions, graphics, visual material (documentaries), etc., making the exhibition an interesting experience for museum audiences of all ages, as well as school visits.

Exhibits

  • 55 exhibits and national treasures dating from the Revolution of 1821 that belong to the collection of the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra (HAMH) (traditional costumes of the time from Hydra, navigation instruments, paintings, philhellene objects, weapons of admirals from Hydra, including short and long barrel rifles, pistols, swords, archival material and historical documents, etc.). The above exhibits are characterized as national treasures of historical value and with this exhibition are presented for the first time outside of Greece.
  • 20 ship models that come from the collection of Mr. Dimitrios Maras, Mechanical-Engineer M.Sc., Microshipbuilder who has studied in depth the shipbuilding history of Greece, as well as the construction of ship models. These models represent ships that were used during the naval operations of 1821. The entire collection amounts to more than 150 wooden models of Greek ships which date from prehistoric antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century.

The models from the collection of Mr. Dimitrios Maras represent ships that were used during the naval operations of 1821. Each model is constructed after extensive research and paying attention to every detail, even to the wood used during each historic period

Characteristics

  • The exhibition requires secure display cases for the exhibits of the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra (HAMH).
  • Each vessel is securely mounted to a custom built wooden base which is covered by a Plexiglas cover for protection. The stands or tables which the enclosed models will sit on are not included and are the responsibility of the borrowing museum. Dimensions to be provided.
  • Geographic location: Southern Europe.
  • Some international shipping crates will need to be constructed to ensure safe ‘nail to nail” transport.
  • Museum curators are provided with extensive information and may curate the exhibition to their specifications.
  • Collection may be expanded or complemented with art from the borrowing museum’s own collections.
  • Collection provides endless opportunities for the development of educational programs, which we can assist with.
