The world’s largest Andy Warhol poster exhibition will come to Tampere Hall’s Park hall from June 18th to August 25th. The Andy Warhol (1928–1987) Poster Exhibition will contain around 120 of Warhol’s framed and museum-quality original posters from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, with covers for books, magazines and albums, rare collectibles, along with dozens of editions of Interview magazine published by Warhol.

The exhibition is designed by exhibition architect Taina Väisänen, who has also been responsible for the construction of the Moomin Museum and the Barbie exhibition at the National Museum. The exhibition is made respecting the original and multi-sensory whole of Warhol’s art, in which visuality and music go hand in hand.

According to Timo Suomi, Executive Producer at Tampere Hall, Andy Warhol’s work will arrive in Tampere at just the right time.

“The whole world seems to be in a state of turmoil, making it more important than before to question big authorities. We believe that Warhol’s provocative pop art will get the best possible home at Tampere Hall next summer”.

In addition, Tampere Hall will run an art competition in February, in which Finnish artists will be able to make their own interpretation of Andy Warhol’s art legacy in modern day Finland. A collection from the best entries will be built and displayed in connection with the Andy Warhol exhibition.

“I am a deeply superficial person” – The artist, whose works do not age.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the world’s most famous artists, whose works still seem amazingly topical. He was a visual artist, drawer, photographer and filmmaker, considered to be one of the founders of pop art. Warhol had his fingers in almost all of New York’s art in the 1960s through the 1980s.

Andy Warhol began working as an independent artist in the early 1960s, painting pictures of details used by advertisements and tabloids. After his international breakthrough in 1964-65, he began to print his posters at the request of art galleries. Like Warhol’s paintings and graphic prints, his iconic posters also show stars from Elizabeth Taylor to Mick Jagger and deal with the banality of consumer society as themes vary from cans to cows.

Warhol himself claimed that there was nothing deep in him or in his works. The conclusion is up to the viewer – do the pictures tell us something bigger or are they just a surface?
