The New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) presents M.C. Escher: Impossible Reality from July 16, 2010 through Nov. 14, 2010 in the Museum’s McKernan Gallery.
One of the largest, most comprehensive collections of the work of M.C. Escher (1898-1972) comes to New Britain via the Herakleidon Museum, Athens, Greece. Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) earned worldwide acclaim as a printmaker, draftsman, book illustrator and muralist with his graphic work of unforgettable visual puzzles and impossible structures.
One hundred and thirty works spanning Escher’s career—the most representative as well as rare works of the artist—will be on view including seminal, instantly recognizable pieces such as “Ascending Descending” and “Drawing Hands”.
The Athens museum’s collection consists of more than 250 of M.C. Escher’s most important and rare works as well as woodcuts, mezzotints, lithographs, photographs of the artist, sculptures and many of his personal items.
Nicolas Kondoprias, the Director of the Herakleidon Museum, says of the New Britain exhibition, “this will be the largest and, with regard to quality, the finest Escher collection on exhibit in the world—pristine.”
A robust schedule of related programming has been planned including a symposium, lectures, film and music. Studio classes will also focus on Escher. Escher merchandise will be available in the Museum Shop.
